After the acclaimed success of director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster (2015), 2017 brings audiences his latest work, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Following Yorgos’ style of dark and twisted stories, this film follows Steven, a charismatic cardiovascular surgeon, who takes a fatherless teenage boy, Martin, under his wing after he intrudes into Steven’s life in unsettling ways. The boy’s intentions are revealed as menacing after he unveils a long-forgotten piece of the past to Steven. Critics who have viewed pre-screenings of Yorgos’ newest project have given the film an average score of 84, which compared to this year’s trend of low-quality movies, is an exceptional score.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer seems to have the stage set for a spectacular premier, with critics saying the movie is a mesmerizing thriller with uniformly great performances (Brian Tallerico, rogerebert.com). The movie screams uneasiness with Martin’s off-putting behavior and the set up for disaster for main character Steven. As is the case with previous Lanthimos films, the audience will see the plot heading in one direction, until it is completely abandoned in favor of a twist that breaks the uniformity of the story, all the while creating a better thriller.
As stated by many critics, both past and present, Lanthimos’ films are art. Each film possesses a new feel and mindset, exhibiting different approaches from the director to each plot.
With Lanthimos’ cult-like fan base, he can expect to see more than just a return on the film’s budget. With a full cast of A-list and indie actors/actresses, fans of Lanthimos’ work and frequent moviegoers can expect a phenomenal production well-worth their money that keeps them thinking and on the edge of their seats. The Killing of a Sacred Deer has already won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and is nominated for three other awards. The October 20 release date is sure to see an exceptional amount of sales, and the return of many fans hungry for another one of Lanthimos’ oddities.
