On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, after long losing streaks, the Tiller Girls Lacrosse team proved triumphant in hard-fought battles for the coveted “dubya.” The team culminated a successful streak with an 9-6 win over Rosary Academy on their turf with one shot by Sophomore Jazmin Martinez, one by Sophomore Jasmine Candias, two by Sophomore Joni Myers, two by Sophomore Citlaly Rodriguez, and a hat trick from Sophomore Daphne Tautuaa—a career first. Not to mention, in the first half Freshman goalie Andrea Rojas blocked three goals in her third game ever with Tiller Girls Lacrosse and seasoned Junior goalie Citlalli Mora maintained the streak with four blocks in the second half.
The win follows another triumph against Segerstrom High School on Thursday, March 23 as the Lady Tillers went home with an 11-5 win at home with six shots from Sophomore Joni Myers, three from Sophomore Andrea Palma, one from Sophomore Citlaly Rodriguez, and one from Sophomore Zoey Beckwith. After the switch in head coaches from Geoffrey Pinney to Max Maldonado and the loss of their Seniors and star shooters—Celine Rios, Mitxi Herrera, and Yvette Lezama—the Tiller Girls struggled to find their footing, but now they have regained their step (and in cleats).
Jumping up in down in a mixture of delight and adrenaline, Junior goalie and co-captain Citlalli Mora professed, “I could tell that all the girls on the field really wanted to win. It was evident right off the draw. It was evident as the girls ran or passed the ball down the field. It was evident in the dodges in an effort to make it to goal and score.” Singing similar praises, assistant coach and former midfielder for the Tiller Girls Lacrosse Team, Reinalda Aquino, says, “It was a great, competitive game. The teamwork and group cohesion was a real driving factor behind the win. We could do better on ground balls and passing but, as a team, we are definitely moving in the right direction.”
