When Life Gives You Lemons…

By Bryan Garcia, Edwin Contreras, and Jason Aquino

Happy – feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.

This emotion is so simple to understand, yet many do not have it in their lives. The many obstacles that we face in our lives has taken away what little faith we have in this simple emotion. Examples of these obstacles can be a scarring break-up or the loss of a passionate job. And then there are more complicated reasons such as chemical imbalances in the brain or passed down genes from the individual’s parents. Whatever it may be, emotional turmoil is happening among a fraction of the world’s population. As a result of this, some melancholic people try to obtain happiness by surrounding themselves in materials or events that alleviate their depression. Sometimes it works….and sometimes it fails.

Many have speculated as to how a person can obtain happiness. However, this puzzle is a difficult one to solve because of the different perceptions that people have when it comes to happiness. A person may believe that money will make them happy, but another may believe that happiness comes from within. And then there are others that try to set their standards high – believing that they would achieve the ultimate source of happiness  There are some occasions where a person will become happy, but…what happens when we do find happiness?

When something good happens to us, we evidently want more of that specific good thing. Although this doesn’t happen to every human being, there are some that take it to the extreme and they become obsessive over that good thing. Is this true happiness or an uncomfortable form of an addiction?

So what can we do? Considering that everybody has a different backstory, there is no “one-solution” to this problem. Fortunately, there are a few remedies that a doleful person can take in order to gain happiness. According to Psych Central (link down below), there is one remedy as to how a person can obtain happiness and that is to “live a better life” Although “live a better life” can have multiple meanings on different perspectives, Jason, Edwin, and I believe we need to have self-acceptance in our lives. Let’s face it, low self-esteem starts with comparing yourself to others. If a person wants to become a happy camper, they need to accept what life has to offer them.

Another thing to keep note of is that happiness can be created by gratifying everything we have. One of the main reasons why we suffer from depression is because we heavily focus on the negatives rather than the positives. In order to succeed in our pursuit of happiness, we must focus on anything that makes us have a sense of joy. How rare is it for a person to become depressed doing what they love? It’s pretty rare.

While happiness is our priority in order to make our lives easier, we have decided to listen to some thoughts from a couple of Tustin High students to see what they think over man’s relentless pursuit of happiness.
