The Hamlet Thrill-ma-geddon

By Kyle Arbiola

Stuck with nothing to do after school the rest of the week? Longing for some form of entertainment to pass the time? The Hamlet Thrill-ma-geddon is the answer to your prayers, it is quite the Shakespearience.

The Hamlet Thrill-ma-geddon is a two-hour satirical play performed by Ms. Markley’s advanced drama class. The play stars Derek Zamudio as Hamlet, Drew Donahoo as Chip, Jacqueline Jimenez as Jesse, and many more talented students. It opens up with Chip and Jesse explaining to the audience that their drama club’s budget has been cut due to a prank pulled by the goofball Chip. They are distraught as their only hope is the famous play Wicked, although due to their budget, it is performed by sock puppets. Suddenly a mysterious, ankle-bracelet wearing woman appears and tells them that they’re in luck. She explains to them that corporate sponsorship is the solution to their financial problems. At first they are reluctant, but the mysterious woman sweet talks them and they eventually comply. They decide to do Shakespeare’s Hamlet except with a twist.

The corporate sponsorship aspect is present throughout the play as it includes commercials from companies like Gatorade, Dr. Pepper, and even Fisher Price toys. This gives the play comedic effect as the audience seemed to love it. Another thing the audience seemed to love was how they implemented modern references into a medieval play. From references to Angelina Jolie’s habit of adopting children to Lindsay Lohan and her reputation, it was a nice touch and it made this play more entertaining than it already is.

The acting in the play was pretty much spot on except for a few minor mistakes, but you can’t blame them, it was just that funny. The play featured standout performances from juniors, Derek Zamudio and Karla Sanchez. Derek’s Hamlet was truly a spectacle to watch, every scene he was in was a highlight. His commanding presence and flow showed that he was the main role for a reason. Karla’s Ophelia was also a sight to see. Even though she did not get much screen time, she played the part of overly attached girlfriend to perfection.

If you have some spare time on your hands and are looking for something to do tonight and tomorrow night, I suggest going and seeing this production put on by the Ms. Markly’s drama department. Tickets are $5 at the student store and $8 for adults and at the door. The show starts at 7pm and ends around 9pm, so make sure you get your homework done before then.
