Trump vs Clinton: Who Will Be Our Next President?

By Antonio Nuñez and Tino Hernandez

In a few months the United States will hold its elections and the people will be given the power to decide who they want leading the nation. This year the final two candidates that will race to reach the presidency are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Without a doubt, history can be made in these elections if Hillary Clinton is to occupy the White House due to the fact that she would be the first woman president in U.S. history. Hillary Clinton has been attacked by many since the start of her campaign and a lot of people believe that she has had an advantage above other candidates because of her participation in the Obama Administration. Many people have also accused her of being too centrist due to her Republican background. Not only has this made her lose several voters but her controversial emails that were leaked not long ago have weakened her shot at presidency.

Despite these events that could be considered negative for her campaign, many have continued to support her. She has made several propositions that have won her numerous amounts of voters. For instance, her view on immigration states that “[w]e need comprehensive immigration reform with a path to full and equal citizenship. If Congress won’t act, I’ll defend President Obama’s executive actions—and I’ll go even further to keep families together. I’ll end family detention, close private immigrant detention centers, and help more eligible people become naturalized”. This quote has satisfied and relieved many who have immigrated to this country in search for freedom. For example, former Inglewood High School student Jorge Perez immigrated from El Salvador at a young age along with his family and is now close to making his dream of playing in a professional soccer team come true. We asked for Jorge’s opinion on this quote and he told us that “[i]t’s nice to see a presidential candidate have this perspective on immigrants”.  He also stated that “most immigrants are actually really hard working; they are like me, they come here in search for a better life and to pursue their dreams”.

In the past year presidential candidate Donald Trump has been the center of attention due to his controversial comments.  He has made various statements that many consider racist. One of his most recent claims was directed towards the Muslim religion after he promised to ban them from the country if his presidential campaign is to be a success. Donald Trump has targeted and offended many other people; for instance, immigrants. His speech on immigrants was without a doubt one of the most debated topics these past few months, and it has angered many. The now famous quote states that they are “[b]ringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists”. We decided to get the opinion of a fellow Tustin High student named Adrian Salvador. When asked for his thoughts about this quote he responded, “This is not true. As a hispanic, it is not okay for him to label me as drug dealer or rapist. We immigrate to this country in search for a better life and we’re one of the most hardworking people. I’ve seen Hispanic men and women in their seventies selling popsicles or flowers in the blazing heat.”

Although he is viewed by the media and many others as racist, Trump has proved to be a serious contender to take over the presidency, for he has gained a lot of voters thanks to his propositions that promise to strengthen border security and keep the country safe from any possible attacks. Donald Trump has also provided solutions to reduce the number of deaths caused by guns and other weapons every year. His plan to make this happen is to “[g]et serious about prosecuting violent criminals” and “[g]et gang members and drug dealers off the street to make our cities and communities safer”. We decided to get the opinion of a local neighborhood Trump supporter named Michael Rodriguez.  When asked, Mr. Rodriguez stated the following, “He is a great man. I truly believe he has the ability to create a safer and stronger America.”
In conclusion, the future of America is in the hands of the people and we will be granted the ability to choose our future leader. Both candidates have huge amounts of followers and will make this year’s elections a very even one.
