Girl’s Basketball: Round 2

Saturday night, February 20th, the Lady Tiller’s faced the tough Canyon Comanches team at Canyon. The Lady Tillers did not come up with the win but played tough throughout the first half. Hea Pau’u and Devyn Barner scored most of the Lady Tiller’s points and kept the Tillers close within the first half.

Through out the first half the Lady Tillers moved the ball in the post to Pau’u and Barner to get the easy 2 points. By giving the ball in the post it allowed the Lady Tillers to take the lead a few times in the first quarter. Throughout the second quarter the guards continued to feed the post to take the 4 point lead. Unfortunately as the quarter was coming to the closing 2 minutes, the Comanches went on an 11-0 run to take the 15-24 lead at the half.

In the beginning of the 2nd half the Comanches hit 7 points in the opening minutes and never looked back. The Comanches took the 49-29 victory and move on to the third round. The Lady Tillers fall out of the CIF playoffs and will have another shot at a CIF championship next season.

Although the Lady Tiller’s season was cut short, they are proud in themselves and the achievements accomplished this basketball season. After the loss on Saturday night Hea Pau’u stated, “We did not walk out with our heads hung low, we went into the locker room singing and expressed how proud we were of each other and how well we did this season.” Pau’u went on to state, “Coach Gocke even said, ‘This is the best part of season, you guys walking in here proud of what has been done this season.’”

Despite the fact the Lady Tillers loss the game, Lily Ballestero asserted she was proud she had come to Tustin and stated, “I’d rather lose with you guys than to lose with Canyon.” The season may have come to an end but the Lady Tillers are ready for another season. The Lady Tillers will lose no starters for next season and will not lose any key players off the bench. The Lady Tillers are a young team and are hungry for next season and another shot at a CIF championship.
