The New Face of Tiller Golf: Chloe Carraway

By: Katelyn Merrell and Benjamin Rodriguez

“She is focused. When she gets out on that golf course she is dialed in. She focuses on every stroke, stroke by stroke.” -Coach Miguel

Freshman golfer Chloe Carraway humbly paves the way for the future of the Tustin High Golf Program as she qualified for CIF this fall season. Unfortunately, she missed qualifying for the next round of the CIF state tournament by a stroke. However, despite the disappointing day on the green, Carraway successfully introduced herself as a force to be reckoned with on the course.

Carraway shares, “ My high school golf experience was very fun. All the girls were very nice and I just had a really enjoyable experience.” The golf team is coached by Mr. Miguel and Mr. Rice. “Coach Miguel made a huge impact on me this season because he helped to make me more confident.” Pioneering the path for the golf program, Chloe Caraway is the first female golfer at Tustin High School to qualify for CIF. Caraway, recounting her experience, humbly explains, “Leading up to CIF, my season was going really well. The first day of league finals didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, but the second day went a lot better. The day of CIF I was a little nervous, but I ended up playing fairly well. [Regarding not qualifying for CIF] I was a little disappointed, but not devastated. The one thing that disappointed me was missing the cut by one stroke.”

“It's been a long time since Tustin has had a player of her talent, caliber.” -Mr. Miguel

Tustin’s golf phenomenon began playing golf at the age of seven. However, golf was not her first sport. Her mom originally enrolled her in dance at an early age, but young Carraway lost interest and decided to chose a new avenue. “Since I quit dance, my mom made me pick a sport. I did not want to play soccer or softball so I randomly chose golf.” And the rest was history.

“Chloe is obviously a very talented player, so as far as coaching goes, it was easy. She already had a practiced routine and plan. She was already so far along with her development,” explained Coach Miguel. Even at such a young age, Carraway’s exceptional mental strength set her apart from her competitors this season. “Her short game is outstanding. There are not many flaws in her golf game. Her lone weakness right now is experience,” continued Coach Miguel on his star golfer. Her goals for her next three seasons are simply to advance further into the CIF state tournament, which seems inevitable if Carraway continues to perform at the high level she is accustom to.
